Badges

From version 1.35.1 release on the 12 of September 2013 , under the Agent tab in the ingress app, there is a section dedicated to badges. These are achievements normally with 5 levels to unlock (exception being the founder badge). To unlock each level a certain amount of times a certain must be done (capturing portals, destroying resonators, etc).

The 5 levels are in ascending order (ref:Your Agent profile)

  • Bronze
  • Silver
  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Black (sometimes called Onyx)

If the Bronze level has not been reached the badge will have a locked symbol on it, or for some badges they will not even be shown until you have unlocked them (for example Seer and Recruiter). Each level has the same icon but with a different color scheme.

Some badges are retroactive, that is, even though they may have been introduced later in the game's history, the stats they are based on started counting when you began playing. Other badges rely on statistics that were only added in later releases of the scanner, and so began counting at other times, usually around the time the badges were introduced. Where possible we've included notes below on how each badge works.

The Seer badge is a particular exception case as it was suspended partway through its history. While there's some hope this restriction will be lifted, as things stand that does not seem likely, and only portal submissions between November 1st 2013 (when the badge went live) and December 31st 2014 (when it was suspended) count toward Seer.

More info on each badge can be found below.

Seer

Discover and successfully submit new Portals

Extra Info - Portals submitted after December 31, 2014 are no longer counted for this badge. However, portals submitted before this date but approved after are still counted. On January 24, 2015, the locked badge was removed from profiles of agents who had not yet reached the bronze tier. Approval of old portal submissions can still unlock the badge for these agents.

Guardian

Maintain control of a Portal for an extended period of time.

Extra Info - The period is counted in days. so for example for the bronze badge you need to control a portal for 3 days straight. You must be the owner of the portal, and have a resonator deployed on it for it to count. If your resonator gets upgraded or destroyed (without neutralizing the portal), the counter stops, but if you then deploy or upgrade a resonator at the portal, it is resumed and the period where you had no resonators on the portal is counted as well.

Extra Info - This badge was released later on the 10th of January 2014.

Extra Info - A lot more things than just hacking count as “visiting” a portal. Includes hacking, deploying a resonator or mod, upgrading a resonator, and linking from the portal. Does not include linking to the portal using its key, recharging the portal, attacking the portal, destroying resonators, or even neutralizing the portal. For a portal to count as a distinct portal you cannot have visited it before. Example - you hack portal A. If hack it again the count will not increase (the first visit of the portal is the only one that counts).

Sojourner

Hack a portal in consecutive 24 hours period.

Extra Info - Every time you hack a portal, the game checks the amount of time between now and your previous hack. If it is less than 24 hours, the time is added to your counter. If it is more than 24 hours, your counter is reset to zero. It does not matter which portal is hacked: if you hack portal A, wait 23 hours, then hack portal B, the counter increases by 23 hours.

The counter is displayed in days and rounded up. This badge was released on March 6, 2015. Consecutive hacks before this date are not counted. The release of the badge set all counters to zero, and hacking within 24 hours of the badge's release added the time since release to the counter.

Eve

In recognition of recruiting new iPhone Agents.
These are only obtained via passcodes

Extra Info - Attaining this badge required posting pictures of three new Agent recruits to social media, then submitting a form to Niantic for review. Alternately you could create and post recruiting poster ideas and, if a Niantic staffer “liked” your work, you might have attained a code for the badge. Either way, this was only available July 14th to August 10th, 2014, following the iOS release of the Ingress app. Despite the phrasing on the badge description, the recruits could be either Android or iOS users.

Extra Info - On the 14th of December 2013, this badge was given to all players that were level 5 or higher at the time.
When the badge came out the number 1337 was seen below the description (leet). After a few days that was removed.

Innovator

In recognition of your contributions during Ingress Year Two.

Extra Info - Given to all players who on the 15th of November 2014 were at least a certain level. Unlike Founder, this badge does count towards the level requirements, which caused some agents to level up when the badges were given out on November 17. This badge does not update as you level, it was a one-time award.
